The two teams from Sandwick and two teams from Brae took part in two different debates, debating for and against the motion that this house believes that renewable energy brings lots of benefits to local communities. The first team from Sandwick was made up of , Catherine Hannah, Darin Eldridge and Connor Dickson. They were arguing against the motion. The second team from Sandwick was made up of Samuel McCormack, Samuel Watt and Yasmin Lawrence. They were arguing for the motion in the second debate.
The winning team was Sandwick Team 2 and Sandwick Team 1 were the runners up.
We really enjoyed taking part in the debate. We are also very proud that the winning team will be representing Sandwick Junior High School and Shetland in the semi finals and hopefully the final in Edinburgh in March! We would like to thank Lisa Ward from Viking Energy, and Mrs Malcomson and Mr Murray, who gave us so much support!

The Big Green Challenge is a debating competition for S2 pupils in the Highlands and Islands area. The competition reflects the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in Scottish schools, focuses on renewable energy and will test the topical science knowledge and debating skills of all participants.Following consultation with teachers, it has been agreed that the competition will be open to all S2 pupils, and should involve a whole class, making the most of the cross-curricular themes (English, Modern Studies, Geography and topical Science).
From each school, the best team of three will go through to the local heats, battling it out against other local schools. Eight local heats will take place in selected schools and locations across the regions. The eight winning teams will then go through to the finals, which will be judged by a panel of renewable energy experts and will take place in a high profile location, to be confirmed. The previous final was presented by BBC broadcaster Cathy MacDonald.
Each team's job is to progress to the next stage by winning the judges over through convincing arguments. Experts will be on hand to visit schools and give teams coaching hints and tips.
